I am a big fan of getting right to the point, so let’s dive right in. Here are five tips to set yourself up for more happiness, wealth and fulfillment with your career.

1. Tap Your Inner Wisdom.
The number one reason why people are not clear on their purpose and calling is that most don’t know what to ask or how to allow the answer to emerge from their inner wisdom. The starting question is so ridiculously simple that it can be invisible. It is “what is my purpose?” Even if you have asked yourself that question, it can still seem elusive. The secret is to ask over and over until the answer becomes clear. It also requires that you quiet your mind and all the other thoughts that get in the way. This can be achieved through meditation, a walk in nature, and using deep breathing techniques. The idea is to clear the channel between your mind and your higher consciousness.

Another supporting technique in finding your purpose is to take a careful look at what comes naturally to you. You were born with a certain set of skills and abilities that enable you to complete certain tasks as easily as breathing. And, because it is so easy, you may not be able to see what it is. Even if you know what it is, you may (mistakenly) believe that everyone has the same ability. But they don’t. What advice or help do people seek from you? Look very, very closely – the clues are there and you may have to be able to see what’s right in front of your eyes.

2. Express Gratitude & Create Boundaries.
The amount of things you can do to create more time and space for your personal passions is so prolific, I wrote an entire book on the subject. The most important thing you can do is to shift your perspective from “having and doing” to “being and feeling.” Understanding that life is about the journey and not the destination relieves a lot of stress and creates the “space” to do more practical work. Coming from a place of anxiety and tension will obstruct even the best intentions to become more productive. Ease and flow can be found in the expression of gratitude. Gratitude is a form of belief and when you believe that you have plentitude in your life then you will!

Another important step in creating more time and space is to understand that everything is a choice. Good choices are aligned with your values and beliefs. Poor choices – and the ones that cause stress – are ones that arise from a sense of obligation. Define your passions and values and then make choices that support these things. Be willing to say “no” to the things that are not aligned with who you choose to be. In the end, you really don’t know how much time you have on this Earth, so make the time commitment to experience more of what you enjoy every day.

3. Focus on What You Want & Love the “Hell” Out of Yourself.
Where you focus your intentions and attention is what you will manifest in life. Lack of confidence comes from focusing on the things you don’t want instead of the things you do want. Studies indicate that human beings have over 60,000 thoughts per day and that the majority of them are negative. When thought is allowed to dwell on scarcity instead of abundance, it creates weakness in our resolve, our bodies and our confidence. Confidence can be found in noticing and stopping limiting beliefs such as “I’ll never be able to do that,” “I’m not good enough,” and “there’s not enough.”

Greater confidence can also be found in developing more love for oneself. Self-love is not conceit or narcissism but rather the acceptance of oneself “as is.” In a world that that masks insecurity with bravado and that relies on guilt and shame as defensive tactics, it can be difficult to feel love for one’s self – especially for perceived flaws and shortcomings.

4. Release Judgment & Take Bold Action.
Just thinking about changing jobs or venturing out on your own can be overwhelming and paralyzing. The biggest secret to staying energized and motivated is to release resistance through transition. Resistance is created when judgment and expectation overtake intuition and self-knowing. When judgment and expectation are replaced with curiosity, ease and flow ensue. Getting curious and continuing to ask “what else is possible?” keep the channel to possibilities open and flowing. Coming to conclusions and defending opinions greatly limit infinite possibilities.

Change is unsettling because you are moved outside of your comfort zone and can feel downright scary – but it almost always leads to transformation. Think about the times in your life when you grew and expanded the most, it was probably brought on by some sort of transition. Change is what causes us to activate more of our innate abilities and to express more of who we are. The way to master change is to remain positive, fluid and open-minded. Staying focused on the direction (of your vision), taking bold action, allowing yourself to fail (fast) and to keep moving is a winning formula for moving through change quickly and successfully.

5. Build Supportive Belief & Accountability Systems.
Once you have a vision, determine what beliefs you’ll need to realize it. Examine your belief system – about money, health, happiness, work, sex, relationships, etc. Are they aligned and do they support your vision? Weed out the beliefs that no longer serve you and decide if they are yours or if they were inherited from someone else. Often times, we have limiting and conflicting beliefs that create obstacles. By testing the bricks of your beliefs system and removing those that limit your progress is essential to getting what you want.

Having a strong accountability system is also a formula for sustaining positive change. Effecting changes takes discipline and responsibility. While only you can implement actions and behaviors that will take you where you want to go, you can enlist the help of others to keep you on track. Working with a coach is one excellent strategy to retaining focus and determination. A coach will share your vision and help keep you accountable to it without judgment.
